The existing house was a small, cellular, two storey end of terrace dwelling in Dalkey, Co Dublin. The house was purchased in a very run down condition and needed to be fully refurbished. There were also a number of small outbuildings.
We were commissioned to re-design the existing house and the incorporate it to create a new larger house. The re-designed house would include a new extension to the rear. The extension to the rear was designed as two storey with a rear courtyard which was accessible from the side laneway.
The design took its lead from the existing streetscape, the character of the house and created larger and more useable rooms suitable for contemporary living.
The simple plan has a very contemporary series of spaces. The open plan nature of the ground floor living area provides a feeling of openness and allows the house to make the most of natural light. Sections of the main living area can be closed off to create smaller rooms.
