Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI)’s new Dental Education Centre in Sandyford marks a major step forward in dental training and patient care in Ireland. Designed to accommodate both clinical services and postgraduate education, the facility brings together simulation suites, training surgeries, and support spaces within a purpose-built, high-spec environment.
We have worked as architects on this project, helping to create a setting that supports innovation, accessibility, and excellence in dental education. The retrofit of Reservoir House achieves a 66% reduction in overall energy consumption and a 61% reduction in operational carbon emissions. The building meets the 2030 emissions targets as of 2025 and is on course to achieve NetZero by 2050.
The original building fabric has been significantly upgraded, including the installation of high-performance glazing and an additional 150mm of external insulation. A mixed-mode ventilation strategy has been implemented, utilising natural ventilation where possible. The project serves as a strong example of a cost-optimal retrofit approach, delivering both energy efficiency and long-term sustainability.
