MDO were asked by Friends First to look at their 30,000sqft office with a view to making a significant impact on a workplace that had become tired and dated. Working with a significant internal change management programme undertaken by Friends First, and a highly structured stakeholder process, MDO designed a series of ‘spines’ to create a dramatic interventions in the staff environment.
These highly functional spines run down the centre of each wing of the H-shaped office. They hold new meeting rooms, tea stations, print resource areas and breakout spaces. They use a vibrant yet controlled palette of coral and saffron mixed with a variety of blues to create rich, memorable spaces for staff to break away from the desks.
The whole office with almost 300 staff remained live at all times while the work was carried out over nine phases. Working with Hardy Partnership on costs and project management, Ascough Consulting Engineers for M&E, and fit-out contractor Castlerock Construction, the work was completed on time and within budget.
