Labs & offices
Construction of a mixed use development consisting of residential, office, science and technology, retail and crèche. The office element of the proposed scheme will provide 9500sqm of office floor space on 7 storeys. The Science and Technology building will be operated and controlled by University College Dublin and will provide offices, laboratories and associated canteen facilities, all within the area of 8860sqm on 6/7 floors.
The Science and Technology building is designed to accommodate highly serviced modular research units with tall floor to ceiling heights and raised floors to accommodate services. The building is divided in two by an atrium which separates the central “think “building with the important social aspect of the restaurant and coffee shop below from the longer “research” building with its highly serviced research laboratory areas. The buildings are all high quality campus buildings with stone external finishes throughout and with a modular design motif in stone and printed glass which animate the elevations. The central feature building is formed from an integrated “puzzle of boxes” which float two storeys above the plaza below, allowing the east plaza to extend at ground level through the building and restaurant, creating a visual link and connection into the university campus.
All the buildings are very sustainable, have been modelled for thermal performance and are designed for a mixed mode ventilation system with Geothermal heat pumps using boreholes and heat pumps for both heating and cooling.
